“Happy Gilmore” is among the movies in the pantheon of top sports films of all time. However, it always seemed like a sequel was never in the cards. Well, the wish of long-time fans is expected to finally come true.

Adam Sandler will go down as one of the most popular comedy actors of the late 1990s and 2000s. The Saturday Night Live alum built a fanbase on the legendary skit show and they followed him into his Hollywood career. But talent alone isn’t enough and actors need to deliver at the box office to be a success and the comedian was able to do that with several of his early starring roles.

Many of his hit films have shown solid staying power among fans, but none more so than his iconic 1996 film “Happy Gilmore.” The movie did something that had not happened in a long time and made golf seem cool again while putting a funny spin on the sport. The film, along with the rise of Tiger Woods, was a perfect storm that did wonders for the sport and propelled it back into the mainstream.

Script for ‘Happy Gilmore 2’ reportedly done

However, unlike most well-received movies in Hollywood, “Happy Gilmore” never got the sequel treatment. That isn’t an outlier since Sandler has developed a reputation as an actor with no interest in sequels. But it seems that will now change. On Friday, the man who played bad guy golfer Shooter McGavin, Christopher McDonald, claimed that Sandler has finished a script and he’s seen it.

“I saw Adam about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this,’” he said. “I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that,’ and he shows me the first draft of ‘Happy Gilmore 2.’ Maybe you should cut that out because I don’t wanna be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!”

Of the various films Adam Sandler has starred in, “Happy Gilmore” is the best fit for a sequel to take fans on a journey of where the character has gone since saving his grandmother’s home and becoming a golf star. Furthermore, the 57-year-old has been the face of a few other outstanding sports movies, including “Waterboy” and “Hustle.”

Considering that the project is in the early stages of development it may be at least two years before an actual film hits movie theaters.
