Charlie Woods, the 15-year-old son of legendary golfer Tiger Woods, has teed off at a local qualifying event for the 2024 U.S. Open earlier today.

The 18-hole local qualifier in Port St. Lucie, Florida is being held at the Legacy Golf & Tennis Club.

The younger Woods is one of 84 players in the field. The top five finishers from this event will advance to a 36-hole qualifier, which is a significant step towards playing in the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 in June.

Charlie Woods Seeking To Qualify For The US Open

Charlie Woods participated in the Cognizant Classic pre-qualifier earlier in the year where he shot a round of 86.

He’s also taken part in the last four PNC Championships, where professional golfers team up with a family member. He and Tiger tied for fifth place this past year.

Highlights were plenty, including, according to the PGA Tour, Charlie hitting “driver onto the green at the 349-yard seventh,” and then producing “the team’s shot of the weekend at the par-4 ninth.”

Tiger was thrilled about playing with his son at the PNC.

“I think the whole week, to be able to share it with my family,” Woods said. “To have both my kids out there the last two days has been so special.”

“Just grateful for us to be able to have these types of experiences, for Charlie and I to have done this for four years in a row now since the start of COVID, to be able to come out here, and for all of us as families to come out and enjoy the week, it’s special.”

Nasty Swing

It’ll be quite difficult for Charlie Woods to finish in the top five and advance, then advance during the final qualifier and actually take part in the U.S. Open.

But he has shown moments of exceptional talent. Including a flop shot at the driving range last year that his father described as “f—ing nasty.”

This is more about getting Charlie some reps in pressure-packed play.

The elder Woods has won three U.S. Open Championships – in 2000, 2002, and 2008.

This year’s Open will be played at the famed Pinehurst No. 2, the site of Payne Stewart’s third major and second U.S. Open victory.

He sank a 15-foot par putt on the final hole for a dramatic victory. A statue of his celebration sits near the 18th hole.

Stewart tragically died in a plane crash four months later.
