Winning has its benefits. The Kansas City Chiefs are living that mantra. They’ve just signed head coach Andy Reid to a massive contract extension.

The deal makes Reid the highest-paid coach in the NFL.

Reports have surfaced that the extension will run for 5 years at a total somewhere in the neighborhood of $100 million.

Leading the Chiefs to Lombardi trophies in three of the past five seasons will certainly lead to rewards. And rightly so. Chiefs owner Clark Hunt vowed to make Reid the highest-paid coach – and he has done just that.

Andy Reid Will Be Chiefs Coach Until 2029

The Chiefs also announced earlier this week that along with coach Andy Reid, the team had agreed to new deals for team president Mark Donovan and general manager Brett Veach.

Details of those contracts have not been disclosed. The organization notes that these deals will keep core leadership intact “for the long-term future.”

That has to be a frightening prospect for the rest of the AFC. And the NFL in general for that matter.

“Mark, Brett and Andy have achieved historic success together, and we are thrilled that they will continue in their roles for many years to come,” Hunt said.

Reid expressed gratitude for the contract extension and thanked Hunt.

“I’m incredibly grateful to Clark and the entire Hunt family for giving me the opportunity to lead this historic franchise,” Reid said. “Chiefs Kingdom is a special place and I’m blessed to have the opportunity to be here.”

Accomplishments Are Many

The core leadership group of the Chiefs, including coach Andy Reid, has been in place since 2017. Since then they have brought Kansas City:

  • A 100-34 (.746) record – regular and postseason combined.
  • 7 consecutive AFC West Division Championships.
  • 4 AFC Championships.
  • 3 Super Bowl Championships.

That’s nothing to sneeze at. That’s worthy of being the highest-paid coach in the NFL.

When it comes to coaching, there is nobody on par with Reid at the moment. That includes Bill Belichick.

He is the only coach in NFL history to have over 100 wins with two separate teams (130 in 14 years with the Philadelphia Eagles, 128 in 11 years with the Kansas City Chiefs).

He currently sits fourth on the all-time wins list, behind George Halas, Belichick, and Don Shula.

But, as NBC News points out, this contract extension “gives him a great chance of retiring as the NFL’s all-time leader in wins by a head coach, both in the regular season and in the postseason.”
