The Los Angeles Rams shared the perfect meme before the first round of the NFL Draft Thursday night.

“On the clock in the first round,” the team’s official X account posted.

The caption was accompanied by an image of Rose, a character from the movie Titanic uttering her famous line, “It’s been 84 years.”

The post went viral, amassing nearly two million views.

Los Angeles Rams And The NFL Draft

What makes this social media post such a winner? Well, it hasn’t quite been 84 years for the Los Angeles Rams since they’ve been on the clock in the first round.

But it has been eight. Yes. Eight.

The last time the Rams had a first-round pick was in 2016 when they selected quarterback Jared Goff out of California.

Goff would give the franchise two Pro Bowl seasons and a Super Bowl appearance before being traded to the Detroit Lions, helping to resurrect that team.

The effort to attain Goff, who was selected first overall in the 2016 NFL Draft, along with a series of other draft-day moves, led to the first-round drought.

They traded their first-round pick in 2017 to Tennessee to move up and get Goff. The following year, the first-round pick was traded for wide receiver Brandin Cooks.

In 2019, the Rams first-round pick was sent to Atlanta for additional picks. In 2020 and 2021 it got shipped to Jacksonville in exchange for Jalen Ramsey. 2022 and 2023’s first-round picks went to Detroit for quarterback Matthew Stafford.

And now, finally, the Los Angeles Rams were on the clock for the first round in 2024.

They Waited 8 Years For …

Man, did the Los Angeles Rams ever go all out for their first, first-round draft pick in eight years. With a “Draft House” – a 9,150 square foot palatial enclave they turned into their own personal war room.

With their first selection, the Rams took outside linebacker Jared Verse, a two-time All-American out of Florida State.

USA Today describes Verse as someone who “ticks almost every other box for a player who will create consistent havoc for opposing quarterbacks.”

They gave the Rams a B+ grade for the pick, eight years in the making.

The Rams X post also unintentionally highlights the absurdity of the NFL Draft which takes place over three days, an obvious money grab production that preys on fans desperately wanting some kind of football news to react to and discuss.

Their meme went up at 10:16, more than two hours after the draft had started. The league should turn the draft into a speed-dating format. Three minutes tops for each pick.

And maybe even have the first day involve potential picks sitting down at a table to introduce themselves to each team for two minutes.

The chaos would be glorious. Who wouldn’t watch that?
