Former two-division boxing champion Jermall Charlo has been stripped of his WBC middleweight title. The move comes after he was arrested in Texas on Monday night for DWI and other charges that include fleeing police.
Charlo Arrested
Daily Mail reported that Charlo, 33, has been charged with driving while intoxicated with a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.15. That’s nearly twice the legal limit in Texas (0.08). He was also charged with “fleeing police officer imminent danger SB,” which is a serious offense.
A third charge is for a collision that damaged a vehicle, with the damages costing more than $200. Arrest reports show that Charlo was released on Tuesday on surety bonds of $9,500. Despite the severity of his charges, Charlo’s attorneys claim to be “optimistic” that things will be alright for him.
“We are optimistic that there will be a good solution,” Charlo’s lawyer told TMZ.
A spokesperson from the Pearland Police Department said that Charlo’s red Lamborghini Urus was involved in a collision with another vehicle at around 6:41 PM. After a verbal exchange ensued, Charlo fled the scene. When police tried to pull him over, Charlo ignored their sirens and kept going until officers boxed him in at a red light around one mile away from where the collision took place.

Charlo Stripped Of WBC Title
The World Boxing Council has since stripped Charlo of his middleweight title. In his stead, Carlos Adames is the new champion of the division.
“The WBC has provided and will continue to do as much as possible to support Jermall Charlo during his difficult times with regards to mental wellness,” the WBC said in a statement.
“After a thorough evaluation of the situation and understanding of the facts and times the WBC may rank Jermall in super middleweight,” the statement added.
Charlo hasn’t defended his title in nearly three years, and Adames became interim champion in October of 2022.
Charlo’s History
Charlo is known for having a perfect 33-0 professional record with 22 wins by knockout, with his last boxing match occurring in November when he fought Jose Benavidez Jr. to a unanimous decision. His twin brother Jermell is a boxer as well who is 35-2-1.
Charlo has previously admitted to struggling with his mental health.
“Depression, self-conflation, going from hot to cold really fast is shocking to you,” he told The New York Post back in November.
Charlo went on to admit that he has bipolar disorder as he urged others in his situation to seek help.
“It just feels like everybody is against you, I don’t care if you’re in the Uber, a cab, wherever, everybody is just against you,” he continued. “Why I felt like this, [I don’t know].”
