Moronta’s History

Moronta was born in 1993 to a truck-driving father and a cigar-rolling mother. He was signed with the San Francisco Giants as an international free agent in 2010 at the age of 17 before he made his MLB debut in 2017 as a top reliever.

Moronta went 8-9 in the 2018 and 2019 seasons with the Giants, recording a 2.66 ERA across 121.2 innings pitched.

“Moronta appeared in 136 games with the Giants between 2017 and 2021,” the Giants said in a statement after his death. “His warm spirit will be missed by all, and our thoughts are with his friends and family at this difficult time.”

Moronta would later go on to join the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2022. He played 22 games for that team before he played for the Los Angeles Angels for two games during the past season.

During his six seasons and 177 games in the MLB, Moronta posted an impressive record. Indeed, he went 10-11 with a 3.05 ERA and 202 strikeouts in 171 1/3 innings.

Moronta’s Final Teams

Just before his death, Moronta had been signed by the Bravos de León of the Mexican league. However, he was released from the team just three days before his untimely passing.

“We deeply regret the departure of Reyes Moronta,” the Bravos de León team said in a translated post on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. “We wish family and friends a quick resignation to this news.”

For the 2024-2025 season, Moronta had been signed with the Aguilas Cibaenas, a team in the Dominican league.

“We profoundly regret the unexpected death of pitcher Reyes Moronta, who died yesterday,” the team’s management said in a statement. “The Aguilas board, the baseball operations department and players share the pain with his family, and we pray for his eternal rest.”

It’s always incredibly sad to see someone pass away at such a young age. Please join us in saying a prayer for Moronta’s family, friends, and fans during this difficult time.
