Skip Bayless has never been one to hold back his opinions, and this time, Tom Brady is the target. Yes, that Tom Brady, the one Bayless has praised for years as a football legend. But as a broadcaster? Not so much.
According to Awful Announcing, Bayless doesn’t see the seven-time Super Bowl champ as a star in the booth, claiming he’ll never be better than a “sixth-round broadcaster.” Ouch.
Brady is only two weeks into his massive 10-year deal with Fox to be their lead NFL analyst, but Bayless has already seen enough. Comparing Brady to Tony Romo, Bayless expressed his disappointment, saying, “I was stunned at how much more X and O insight and enlightenment Tony Romo provided instantaneously than Captain Obvious Brady did.” That’s a pretty harsh critique for a guy who’s still learning the ropes of live broadcasting.
The comparison to Romo is where Bayless really digs in. He claims Romo played with his mind, while Brady relied more on feel and instincts that are tough to explain on the fly.
It’s a take that seems a bit backward considering Brady’s reputation for being one of the most cerebral players in NFL history. Bayless even went as far as to say that maybe years under Belichick conditioned Brady to guard his thoughts too much, making it difficult for him to “spill the beans” on national TV.
While Bayless might not be impressed yet, it’s important to remember that Brady is just starting out. As Awful Announcing points out, Brady already showed improvement from Week 1 to Week 2, and there’s no reason to think he won’t continue to get better as he becomes more comfortable in his new role.
Brady may not be a Hall-of-Fame broadcaster yet, but given his track record, it’s way too early to count him out.
