UFC star Colby Covington continues to try to talk himself into a bout with Welterweight Champion Leon Edwards. The number two-ranked contender continued his rhetoric this week.
‘Chaos’ let all his feelings be known on a recent episode of Submission Radio, where he talked about the big UFC 287 event this past Saturday night, the retirement of his hated rival Jorge Masvidal, and his own future as a fighter.
He says that the next few steps for him consist of a title fight with Edwards, and a championship victory thereafter.
However, the Champ is having none of it. He says that Covington needs to get in line and earn his worth.
Edwards (21-3 MMA) recently defeated Kamaru Usman (20-3 MMA) via a decision in March of this year at UFC 286. He says that Covington hasn’t fought enough recently to warrant that coveted spot. Speaking to Ariel Helwani recently on The MMA Hour, Edwards spoke about Colby’s inactivity and the potential for a fight.
“He’s getting rewarded for not taking fights,” Edwards said. “When it was me, I got removed from the rankings. So this Dana White privilege is definitely real.”
Colby Covington (17-3 MMA) hasn’t fought since UFC 272 in March of 2022 when he defeated Jorge Masvidal (35-17) by unanimous decision.
Unfortunately for Edwards, Covington is hearing none of his excuses. ‘The Super Villian of UFC’ has personally insulted the Welterweight Champion, referring to him as “Mumble Mouth” and even mildly attacking his British citizenship.
“Don’t want to give me a title shot mumble mouth? I recall the British not wanting to give Americans our freedom either… So we took it,” Covington posted on Twitter. “See you in July junior.”
Despite what Edwards says, the one who will make the decision regarding a bout will be UFC President Dana White, who has already alluded that it’s in the works.
Following UFC on ESPN 43, White said, “If Usman doesn’t exist Colby’s the champ now for awhile. He cut the weight. He showed up to fill in for that fight and a million other reasons why he deserves that fight.”
More recently in the lead up to UFC 287, White said, “Colby Covington, like him or not, the guy showed up in London. He cut weight. He did what he was supposed to do. He deserves the fight against Leon. There’s no doubt.”
White did caveat his response noting that Gilbert Burns or Jorge Masvidal could leap frog COvington if they put on a spectacular performance, “We’ll see how this fight turns out on Saturday night and the best case scenario is one of these guys are next.”
Covington’s reference to ‘July’ is because that’s been the rumored target date for a meeting between the two.
White suggested that a Colby Covington vs. Leon Edwards fight could take place at the O2 Arena in London, England this summer.
