On Monday, the sports world lost another young man who went way too early. Ronald Powell, who played linebacker for the New Orleans Saints and the Florida Gators in college, passed away at just 32.
The NFL Players Association made the announcement but offered scant details. As of print time, his cause of death has not been released.
Originally from California, Powell had a strong career in high school, even being named an All-American. His college career for the Florida Gators was also strong, posting an impressive 11 sacks and 18.5 tackles for loss. Though he would miss a year in college due to an ACL tear, Powell was drafted by the Saints in 2014 in the fifth round.
He played 14 games for the New Orleans Saints during his rookie season but a lackluster professional career saw Powell get cut and then ride the pine in New Orleans again.
Powell would go on to sign with the Bears and Seahawks before ending his career with the Alliance of American Football. He played for the AAF’s Orlando Apollos before the league dissolved in April 2019.
By all accounts, friends and family remember him fondly. His former teammate, Junior Galette, also shared a heartfelt tribute to Powell on the X social media platform.
The University of Florida also took a moment to mourn his death on X.
“We’re very saddened to learn about the passing of former Gators player Ronald Powell,” they wrote. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones.”
Please join in and say a prayer for Ronald Powell, his family, and his friends.
