Former NFL quarterback Chad Kelly was turning things around playing in the Canadian Football League after washing out domestically.

He signed with the Toronto Argonauts back in 2022, leading the team to the Grey Cup Championship in his first season. Kelly then earned the CFL Most Outstanding Player this past season.

Unfortunately, Kelly’s demons have come back to haunt him.

The CFL announced on Tuesday that the nephew of Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Kelly has been suspended nine games for violating its gender-based violence policy.

“Players are the ambassadors of our great game. They are expected to be leaders in the locker room and role models in the community. It was important that we performed our due diligence to properly review this matter from all points of view.

That in-depth investigation found that Mr. Kelly unequivocally violated the CFL’s Gender-based Violence Policy. Mr. Kelly’s suspension is the direct result of his behaviour. The addition of mandatory counselling focuses on his need for self-reflection and understanding of his actions. He must take full advantage of this opportunity for personal betterment in order to return to the CFL.”

The suspension stems from allegations made by a former Argonauts assistant strength coach. She claims that Kelly made unwanted romantic advances torward her while using threatening language when those advances were rebuffed.

Kelly was kicked off the Clemson Tigers football team back in 2014 for conduct detrimental to the program. He ended up latching on with Mississippi before the Denver Broncos made him a seventh-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

He lasted less than two seasons in Denver before being cut after an arrest for trespassing in a couple’s apartment after a Halloween party hosted by then-teammate Von Miller.

This latest incident raises more concerns over Kelly’s character. He’ll have to pass through counseling and other hoops to be reinstated by the CFL.
