Everybody needs a wingman. Maverick needed Goose. Han Solo needed Chewbacca. And where would Napoleon Dynamite have ended up without Pedro?

And now, Jake Portello, from Haddonfield Memorial High School in New Jersey, has … two-time MLB MVP Bryce Harper?

Indeed. Harper, the Philadelphia Phillies‘ first baseman, assisted Portello with his ‘promposal.’

The young man actually lives in the same neighborhood as Harper and simply knocked on the MLB player’s front door and asked for help.

The duo walked over to his friend’s house where he dropped the question. Harper did, that is. And frankly, he needs to work on his energy and delivery.

That said, it worked!

Bryce Harper Helps With The Prom Proposal

Julia it seems, is super-excited about going to prom with Jake. Even as the first person to secure a hug was Bryce Harper, the wingman.

“Oh, my god, you’re the GOAT,” she says through tears of joy.

No worries. Portella understood who he was with and told “The Phantastic Sports Show” on Monday night that he would eventually get a reward for his proposal.

“I eventually got the hug, so we’re happy about that,” he said. “It makes sense, you know. Bryce is a pretty cool guy and a pretty popular guy around the area.”

Jake was happy thinking it’d be a cool story to tell the other kids in the neighborhood. But when it’s Bryce Harper helping you get a prom date – it makes national news.

Will He Be A Plus One?

Haddonfield High’s prom is set for Friday, June 14th, so it doesn’t seem like Bryce Harper will be able to join Jake and Julia on their special night. He has a game against the Baltimore Orioles.

Still, the high school student is just happy he made the effort to help him out.

“I wasn’t expecting this, I thought it’d be something cool among my friends and people in my town and stuff,” Portella said. “I didn’t even expect him to open the door in the first place.”

But that’s what bros do. Best. Wingman. Ever.
