The hockey world is preparing to say goodbye to one of its all-time greats, as Jaromír Jágr, 52, has announced that the 2024-25 season will be his last.

After an incredible career spanning 37 seasons, Jágr hinted on Instagram earlier this week that the end was near, and later confirmed the news in a call with The Athletic.

According to Fox News, Jágr has been playing professionally in his home country, the Czech Republic, since 2018, but this will be his final chapter.

Jágr’s NHL career began in 1990 when he was drafted fifth overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins. He went on to win back-to-back Stanley Cups with the Penguins in 1991 and 1992. Over his 24 seasons in the NHL, Jágr left an indelible mark on the league. He amassed an incredible 1,921 points, second only to Wayne Gretzky. He also holds several NHL records, including most game-winning goals and most consecutive 30-goal seasons.

After leaving the NHL in 2018, Jágr continued to play for the Kladno Knights, a team he owns in the Czech Republic. Despite playing fewer games and struggling with injuries, Jágr’s love for the sport has kept him on the ice

In the 2023-24 season, Jágr appeared in just 15 games, marking the first time in his career he didn’t score a goal, although he did contribute four assists.

Throughout his career, Jágr has not only achieved NHL success but also won Olympic gold and a World Championship. Now, at the age of 52, it’s time for one of hockey’s longest-lasting players to hang up his skates for good. Fans across the globe will undoubtedly miss seeing this legend in action, but Jágr’s legacy will forever be etched in hockey history.
