Jordan Chiles medal

When it comes to competition, the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee doesn’t take matters lightly — especially when it’s a medal on the line! Case in point: Sarah Hirshland, the USOPC’s CEO, recently made it clear that they’re fighting to ensure gymnast Jordan Chiles keeps her well-deserved bronze medal from the 2024 Paris Olympics. And who wouldn’t? After all, she earned it fair and square.

In what could easily be described as a gymnastics soap opera, Chiles was stripped of her bronze medal due to a technicality involving the timing of a scoring appeal. The Romanians, eager to reclaim the podium, argued that her coach filed the appeal four seconds too late. Four. Seconds. Really? This led to the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s decision to award the bronze to Romania’s Ana Barbosu. But the U.S. isn’t letting this one slide without a fight.

In fact, Chiles still has her medal and doesn’t intend on giving it back.

“We feel an obligation to make sure we get to the truth and the right outcome. So we’re going to fight to get there,” Hirshland told USA Today.

It’s pretty simple: The USOPC believes Chiles rightfully earned that medal, and they’re bringing all the receipts. Well, video evidence, to be exact.

One possible solution could be that Chiles, Barbosu, and another Romanian gymnast, Sabrina Maneca-Voinea, share the bronze. Hirshland acknowledged that this could be a possibility, though she added, “It’s complicated.” You don’t say.

In true Olympic spirit, the USOPC is doing everything they can to defend Chiles’ achievement. After all, as Hirshland put it, “The integrity of the competition is critical to sport, and we want to protect the integrity of competition.” Who doesn’t love a little drama when it’s for a good cause?

While Chiles couldn’t attend the recent White House celebration for Team USA athletes — she’s busy dazzling crowds in Simone Biles’ “Gold Over America Tour” — the fight to reclaim her medal is still very much alive.

Let’s hope justice prevails for Chiles. After all, what’s an Olympic journey without a little fight for gold…or, in this case, bronze?
