Bill Belichick, the legendary coach known for his 24-year tenure with the New England Patriots, has reportedly interviewed for a head coaching position at the University of North Carolina.

This news comes after Mack Brown, a coaching icon in his own right, was dismissed from UNC.

Belichick, who parted ways with the Patriots after a storied career that included six Super Bowl victories, is now exploring opportunities beyond the NFL.

That just sounds absurd. The man has eight rings in total, and nobody in the league needs his guidance?

The bombshell revelation comes via a report from Inside Carolina.

Belichick Coaching Again?

Belichick’s potential move to college football has sparked discussions on whether his NFL strategies and meticulous game planning can translate to the collegiate level.

Will he have the same sway over 18-22-year-olds as he does with NFL players? Will he be able to manage the many pitfalls that come along with the college game?

Recruiting, managing player eligibility, and navigating the complexities of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals are paramount. Player behavior and the NIL program caused one of the all-time college coaching greats, Nick Saban, to walk away.

Inside Carolina notes that others have interviewed for the job at North Carolina. Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall and Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann are two people allegedly in the running as well.

He’s Been Itching To get Back On The Sidelines

Belichick, 72, has been looking to get back on the sidelines for some time now. This comes even after his hiring as an analyst for Inside the NFL on The CW Network.

In fact, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero said that the television gig, along with other public appearances, was simply an attempt to keep the legendary coach’s name in the headlines and involved with the game in some capacity.

“Bill Belichick intends to coach in 2025,” Pelissero insisted, speaking as a guest host on The Rich Eisen Show back in July.

“He’s staying engaged in the game, he’s showing up to roasts. He’s now going to be on Inside the NFL. We’ve seen him showing up to different events,” he added. “He’s fully invested and he wants to coach again.”

The prospect of Belichick coaching college football is pretty exciting. Known for his defensive genius and ability to adapt, there’s a curiosity about how he would handle the unique challenges of college athletics.

His interview with UNC, a program with a rich football history but in need of revitalization, suggests Belichick might be looking to leave an indelible mark in a different realm of the sport.

Or maybe, for whatever reason, NFL teams aren’t interested in his services. And maybe, just maybe, he wants to be a little closer to some more cheerleaders in his target age bracket.
