It seems one player on the Marshall Thundering Herd decided to take the team’s nickname a little too far, stampeding his way through a ball boy after their last game against Old Dominion.
The incident occurred Saturday after Marshall won the exciting back-and-forth matchup, 42-35, keeping them in first place in the Sun Belt Conference.
Defensive back Josh Moten was involved in what has been described as an “intense scuffle” with the ball boy of all people.
Video appears to show the ball boy trying to get the game ball out of Moten’s hands by poking it away. He and the player went back and forth as the ball fell to the ground, with Moten eventually dropping the guy.

Marshall Football Player Drops Ball Boy
It’s certainly difficult to ascertain what exactly is going on in this video. What did the ball boy do even before this clip starts? Or did Moten instigate somehow?
Either way, Marshall’s junior DB apologized for the football scrum with the ball boy.
“I’m sorry for the incident after the game yesterday,” he wrote on X on Sunday. “That’s not what I’m about. Intense game and, in that moment, emotions got the best of me.”
“To ODU and to my team, I’m sorry it took attention away from a great game,” he added.
Moten had 5 tackles in the big win, 4 of them solo, and an interception.

Fans Are Forgiving
Most fans on social media gave Moten a pass for his actions, especially since the video shows the ball boy not acting appropriately.
That said, body-slamming him to the ground didn’t seem necessary.
Ball boys and other support staff are integral to the game’s smooth running, yet they often find themselves in the thick of the action, sometimes inadvertently. The balance between maintaining order and allowing for the natural release of competitive energy is delicate.
Moten, fired up after a huge win, is evidence of that.
Both individuals seem to have crossed a line. Is it anything that should be harped on further? No. Should we forgive, forget, and move on? Absolutely.
