Los Angeles Dodgers star first baseman Freddie Freeman was placed on the family emergency list this past weekend amid health concerns surrounding his three-year old son, Maximus.

Freeman’s wife, Chelsea, had previously noted that their son was taken to the emergency room of a local hospital last week. There was no further information in the child’s status.

Well, Chelsea provided an update on Instagram Thursday evening. To say that the situation is heartbreaking would be an understatement.

“We wanted to give an update on Maximus. Last Friday, Max rapidly declined and went into full body paralysis. We are very fortunate to have gotten him to the hospital in time so they could reinforce his lungs,” Chelsea wrote on Instagram. “Freddie was in Houston at the time and rushed to the first flight back home. After many tests, Max is battling a severe case of Guillain-Barré syndrome. A rare neurological condition that is especially rare in children.”

The Freemans went on to note that their son has shown significant improvement over the past two days and was taken off the ventilator on Wednesday.

“These have been the hardest and scariest days of our lives,” the couple wrote in a post. “Maximus is such a special boy and he has been fighting SO hard. This is going to be a journey to recover, but we have faith that he will be completely healed.”

Guillain-Barre syndrome is a disease in which the body’s immune system attacks the nerves. It can cause weakness, numbness or paralysis. While there is no known cure for the illness, most people eventually recover.

Freeman joined the Dodgers on a six-year, $162 million deal back in March of 2022 after spending his first 12 MLB seasons with the Atlanta Braves.

Freddie an his wife have three sons, Charlie, Brandon and Max. Our best go out to the family as they deal with this scary situation.

As for a potential return to the Dodgers, it’s not yet known when Freeman will be on the field again. But that’s the least of his concerns right now.
