NASCAR fans are not happy with Ty Gibbs after he intentionally wrecked Brandon Jones on the last lap and was subsequently awarded the victory after NASCAR threw the caution and checkered flags.
On the final restart, Jones started in the second row behind his teammate Ty Gibbs. Going into Turn 1, Jones used his bumper to move Gibbs up the track and forced a three-wide battle with Noah Gragson at the top.
They would stay three wide down the back stretch and going into turns three and four. Gibbs would ride Gragson up the track sending him backwards while Sheldon Creed gave Jones a boost to propel him to the lead down the front stretch.
After taking the white flag and going back down into Turn 1, Gibbs ran into the rear of Jones sending him spinning into the outside wall and bringing out the caution. Given the caution was brought out on the last lap, NASCAR ended the race and awarded the win to Gibbs.

Following the conclusion of the race, Gibbs was booed vigorously by the fans at Martinsville.
He was then asked if his intentional wrecking of Jones was a fair a move. He responded, “I definitely didn’t want to wreck him, but I wanted to get him out of the groove. I felt like we lost earlier in the spring race just in the same way, but I’m just pumped to get this win. And it’s so awesome. Especially a track I feel like I’ve been coming to forever. I ran late models here and it’s super cool to win here. ”
Gibbs would go on to further justify his action in the post-race press conference saying, “At that point, after I feel like we got shoved out of the way for the lead and I wanted to do a teammate restart. I felt like that was racing. We’re racing for a win after that. So that’s my logic on it.
He later noted, “It doesn’t take the fact that I took him out of the championship, but I’m racing for a win after that after I got moved and that’s part of it.”
Gibbs then added, “I definitely didn’t want to crash him, but I wanted to move him. So that’s what happened.”
Jones shared his own thoughts saying, “I had the race won, I think. I don’t know. I love my guys. I love everyone on this 19 group, but I’m excited to make my move to JRM and make sure to be a part of that organization and a little bit more respect over there probably given next year.”
“So I’m excited for that, now. We’ve got one race left, Phoenix. I know we can go out there and win that and shake up this up a little bit still yet. Try to steal a little thunder there so. I don’t know, man, I have no words. I know that we had some fun beating and banging back and forth a little bit, but I’ve never wrecked him or done anything for a win and so it just kind of shows where that level is there.”
When asked if their aggressiveness earlier in the race led to Gibbs wrecking him, Jones replied, “I think it opened up the opportunity to get moved, but I don’t know about dumped and destroyed and finished dead last. I mean I guess at the end of the day I needed to win the race so I think for second and last it is what it is, but just expected to have a little bit more of a shot at it there.
“I think, that to me, that’s what’s fun in this sport, is having a duel not just completely destroying somebody’s day,” he added.
Jones was also asked what he had planned to get even with Gibbs. He answered, “I don’t know, man. I think that he’s made plenty of friends out here on the race track. So time will tell, man. You know, he’s going different places and I’m going different places so I’m sure eventually it’ll all even back up there.”
Following the race, NASCAR fans expressed their disgust with Gibbs on social media with many of them calling for Gibbs to be suspended.
One user wrote, “Should be out the next race.”
Another wrote, “NASCAR should suspend Ty Gibbs. They set the precedent last week.”
“NOPE – he needs to be suspended before the drivers’ meeting tomorrow,” wrote another user.
“If NASCAR doesn’t suspend Ty Gibbs for one race for what he did after the Bubba Wallace/Kyle Larson incident happened just a couple of races ago, they are completely unserious,” tweeted one person.
He added, “Bubba and Kyle should also make it a huge point in the media if a suspension doesn’t happen for Gibbs.”
“He should be out for ententionally wrecking the 18,” wrote another.
RangerRedHead tweeted, “I hope JGR at least gives a statement on that bulls**t today, but unlikely. NASCAR should suspend Ty Gibbs. Disgraceful.”
NASCAR Cup Series driver Erik Jones didn’t call for Gibbs’ suspension, but expressed his disapproval of Gibbs’ actions writing, “Hope that race isn’t taken as an example by anyone coming up racing as how it’s supposed to be done.”
