With Brock Purdy still working under his rookie contract, prime-time player Christian McCaffrey kicked in some cash for the offense’s holiday gifts
NFL fans are used to seeing running back Christian McCaffrey dashing and dancing in the 49ers backfield, but he played the role of San Francisco’s Santa Claus for teammates this Christmas. And he spread that holiday cheer on behalf of his teammate, starting QB Brock Purdy.
Christian McCaffrey Lends Some Help For the Holidays
Typically, a team’s starting quarterback will purchase gifts for the members of the offensive unit – especially the unsung linemen, who work hard in the trenches to protect him but get little recognition.
While it’s more of an informal tradition or unwritten rule around the league, it’s universally accepted just because that position is the focal point of the franchise, and (under most circumstances) he is the highest-paid player in the team.
Unfortunately for Brock Purdy, he just doesn’t have as much money as most NFL quarterbacks, having been drafted last overall in the 2022 Draft. And while former ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ didn’t want to be a Grinch this year, he’s still under his rookie contract, which woefully underpaid the second-year starter and MVP candidate.

Purdy Praises McCaffery While Patiently Waiting To Get Paid
That’s when the 49ers veteran running back stepped in to give his backfield mate a bailout. The All-World running back, Christian McCaffrey, bought the members of the offensive customized golf bags, a bottle of tequila, and a coupon for custom-fitted golf clubs.
Purdy is expected to receive an offer for a contract extension soon that will give him a massive raise. In the meantime, though, it was a great gesture by his explosive teammate around the holidays.
Like the ‘Niners QB, Christian McCaffrey is also in contention for this year’s NFL MVP Award, and could become the first running back to win the honor since the Vikings’ Adrian Peterson in 2022.
So while Purdy waits to get paid, he made sure to praise his partner in the backfield.
“Financially, I wouldn’t be able to cover that right now,” Purdy said about Christian McCaffrey’s kind gesture on Friday. “Shoutout to him. Everyone loved it… So thank you, Christian.”
