Love him or hate him, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is among the most-powerful figures in the sports world. He took a downtrodden organization and led it back to the pinnacle of success in the NFL after buying “America’s Team” back in the late 1980s.

Despite some recent struggles on the field, Jones continues to build a brand in Big D. In fact, Forbes estimates that the Cowboys are North America’s most-valuable professional sports team at $9 billion.

Jones’ tenure as the Cowboys’ owner has also come with some major off-field drama. Player arrests have defined what we’ve seen in Dallas through the years. Whether political or scandal-driven, Jones himself has been the topic of several off-field stories. It really has been a soap opera.

Enter into the equation the streaming giant Netflix. They are set to produce a 10-part documentary detailing Jones’ climb up the ladder of powerful sports figures, the Cowboys’ dynastic run of the 1990s and much more.

“Billed as a ‘defining’ docuseries, the untitled project tells the story of team owner Jerry Jones and his unique journey in transforming the Cowboys franchise, leading a historic set of players and coaches to three NFL titles in the 1990s and searing his imprint into the global sports business landscape.”

Deadline report on Jerry Jones Netflix documentary

There is no premiere date for the documentary. But it must be noted that Netflix purchased the project for roughly $50 million, beating out the likes of ESPN and Amazon Prime.

Emmy Award winners Chapman Way and Maclain Way of Wild Wild Country fame will be directing the documentary. They’ll also serve as executive producers for the project.

The series is produced by Skydance Sports in association with NFL Films and Stardust Frames Productions.

It will include central figures in Jones’ role as Cowboys owner. That includes former players such as Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith and Deion Sanders. Former head coaches Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer will also play important roles.

Based on the production companies, it’s highly unlikely that this documentary will focus on some of the scandals that have played a role in Jones’ tenure as the Cowboys’ owner. That includes a recent paternity lawsuit from a woman claiming that Jones paid off her mother to keep it a secret that she is his daughter.

Jones purchased the Cowboys from then-owner H. R. “Bum” Bright for a mere $140 million back in February of 1989. That’s the equivalent of $342.8 million today. As noted above, the NFL franchise is now worth $9 billion.

When Jones took over in Big D, the Cowboys had posted a combined 17-30 record over the previous three seasons — including a 3-13 mark in 1988.

After initial struggles (1-15) in 1989, Jones played a major role in turning the organization around. That included moving off the Tom Landry era after the franchise legend led the Cowboys to two Super Bowl titles during his 29-year-run.

Becoming “America’s Team” once again, the Coboys won three Super Bowl titles during a four-year span from 1992-1995.This helped make them one of the biggest brands in the professional sports world.

All of this will be on display as Jerry Jones is featured on Netflix. It promises to be an interesting 10-part series despite what will likely be some tunnel vision.
