Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker delivered the commencement address at Benedictine College in Kansas on Saturday.

As a devout Catholic, Butker’s message often incorporates elements of God and family values. His speech to the students of Benedictine was no different.

The Super Bowl champion notes that Americans need to lean more on actions than simply resting on their own faith as a defense for their actions.

“We need to stop pretending that the church of nice is a winning proposition,” Butker said. “…We must always speak and act in charity. But never mistake charity for cowardice.”

Harrison Butker Speech Praises Homemakers

Butker, the Super Bowl record-setter, pivoted his speech to address the women in the crowd and suggest those who raise children are not given the respect they deserve.

“I can tell you that my beautiful wife Isabelle would be the first to say her life truly started when she started living her vocation as a wife and as a mother,” he said. “I’m on this stage today, able to be the man that I am, because I have a wife who leans into her vocation.”

Butker was nearly moved to tears over his comments.

“I’m beyond blessed with the many talents God has given me, but it cannot be overstated that all my success is made possible because a girl I met in band class back in middle school would convert to the faith, become my wife, and embrace one of the most important titles of all,” he continued. “Homemaker.”

Family First

Readers of Bounding Into Sports know that Harrison Butker doesn’t always follow the popular prevailing winds in his comments.

What he does do, however, is promote family every chance he gets.

Butker brought up the deadly Super Bowl parade shooting that marred Kansas City’s celebration earlier this year.

“I think we need strong fathers in the home. We need men that are leading, that are setting good examples, that are teaching the young men in our society that violence is not the way to handle our disputes.”

Butker, meanwhile, is the current record holder for the longest field goal in Super Bowl history. He drilled a 57-yard field goal with 20 seconds left in the first half. The Chiefs went on to a 25-22 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.
