The sports world lost an all-time great broadcaster last week. A true giant in his field.
Former CBS Sports play-by-play announcer Greg Gumbel passed away on December 27 after a battle with cancer. Gumbel was part of the sports broadcasting industry for five decades and was a household name for fans of many different sports.
In Super Bowl 35, Gumbel became the first black play-by-play announcer of a major championship in American sports. He was also host of the NCAA Selection Sunday special for over two decades.
Among other big achievements, Gumbel also called NBA games for NBC in the 1990’s, Major League Baseball games on CB,S and was the Primetime anchor in the Winter Olympic Games in 1994. Talk about versatility – Greg Gumbel was the rare man who could step in to any situation and pull it off with aplomb.
