The Kansas City Chiefs are unbeaten, but they are not a ferocious 7-0.
Five of their victories are by seven points or fewer and the offense hasn’t scored 30 points yet this season.
Patrick Mahomes might be considered the top quarterback of his era, but he has more games of fewer than 155 passing yards (two) than games of 300-plus (one).
Travis Kelce, an all-time great tight end, finally found the end zone on Sunday. He is averaging a meager 8.8 yards per reception.
But the Chiefs keep churning out victories, certainly helped out by the fifth-best scoring defense in the NFL (17.6 points allowed per game).
Can Kansas City keep stringing wins together this way? A Week 11 road game against the Buffalo Bills looks treacherous, but most of the slate projects more favorably for the two-time defending champs.
Let’s look at five teams most likely to hand the Chiefs a loss.
1. AT BUFFALO BILLS, Week 11
Buffalo has been eliminated from the playoffs by the Chiefs in three of the past four campaigns, including last season. The Bills have this contest circled and Josh Allen certainly wants to outduel Mahomes. It promises to be a raucous environment in Orchard Park, N.Y.
2. HOUSTON TEXANS, Week 16
This contest represents a big step for a Houston team that thinks it can make some noise in the playoffs. C.J. Stroud passed for 331 yards while beating Allen and the Bills in Week 5 and this clash gives him the opportunity to outplay Mahomes.
3. AT PITTSBURGH STEELERS, Week 17
Pittsburgh could be looking at a clinching situation or needing a win to better its playoff position when these teams meet on Christmas Day. The Steelers have allowed just 54 points in their five victories entering Monday’s game against the New York Giants.
4. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS, Week 9
Tampa Bay has lost three of four entering this visit to Kansas City and its defense is allowing an average of 33.8 points over that span. But the Buccaneers have scored 30 or more five times, which means they could keep pace with the Kansas City attack.
5. LOS ANGELES CHARGERS, Week 14
Perhaps coach Jim Harbaugh will be riding Justin Herbert by then. Herbert threw for less than 200 yards in each of the club’s first four games — including 179 in a 17-10 home loss to Kansas City in Week 4. The Chiefs rallied from a 10-point deficit to win that one.
