Dave Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports, had to be rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard earlier this week after he lost control of his boat off the coast of Nantucket.

Portnoy reportedly unhooked his boat (or it broke free) from the buoys before checking if the engine was working. After realizing he had no power, radio, or anchor, heavy winds quickly caused him to drift out to sea.

“Your boys almost lost Captain Dave today,” he said in a video posted on social media.

Fortunately, Captain Dave was rescued by an actual Captain in a Coast Guard rescue vessel after another boater spotted him in distress and radioed for help. The Coast Guard towed his boat back to safety.

“Captain Dave lives to tell another tale,” Portnoy said as he thanked the agency.

Dave Portnoy Tells Tale Of A Fateful Trip

Captain Dave Portnoy spoke with NBC Boston about the incident and conveyed what was going through his head as he was adrift at sea.

“I knew I was dead meat right then,” he said. “The current was strong. It was probably 20-mph wind on Nantucket. I had no radio, I had no engine, I had no nothing. And I was just floating off to sea, and I knew I was screwed. I knew I was in trouble right then.”

The harrowing ordeal had him on edge, for sure.

“I don’t want to say I stayed calm. The ocean doesn’t care how much money you got. It’ll drown you quick, it’ll humble you quick. I was very nervous,” Portnoy said. “I didn’t know what was gonna happen.”

He praised the Coast Guard for their efforts.

“Without them, maybe I get eaten by a shark, you just don’t know.”

Maybe Stick To Land

Following his lost at sea moment, Portnoy said “Captain Dave may never go in the boat again.”

Perhaps he should consider sticking to modes of transportation on land. Like the horse he bought himself to celebrate a deal to buy back Barstool Sports.

Hopefully he doesn’t get lost in the mountains riding his pony any time soon.
